The Beijing Yirenping Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting social justice and public health. Yirenping has project management offices based in Beijing , Zhengzhou , Shenzhen and. Nanjing .Beijing Yirenping Center has assisted plaintiffs in nearly 200 anti-discrimination lawsuits, most of which were high impact and high profile. For example, Yirenping helped file the following “first cases” in China: the first case against Hepatitis B status privacy infringement, the first case against HIV/AIDS-related discrimination in work place, the first case against Hepatitis C discrimination, the first case against tuberculosis discrimination, the first case against gene-related discrimination, the first case against mental-depression-related discrimination, the first case against color-blindness-related discrimination, the first case against discrimination related to physical appearance. Beijing Yirenping’s two main functions are to provide legal aid to individuals that have been discriminated against on the basis of a medical condition or disability and to advocate for and research policy developments.

Yirenping aided disabled persons in suing the Beijing Subway system to demand accessible facilities, in suing Beijing Subways system, Shenzhen Subway system, and Guangzhou Subway system to demand free ride. Yirenping has held Hepatitis B group therapy sessions and workshops on mental health talks in ten cities as Beijing , Shanghai , Tianjin , etc .

Yirenping has also held trainings for Hepatitis B and HIV carriers, persons with disabilities as well as carriers of other diseases on their legal rights and how to combat discrimination. These training have been held in over ten of cities, including Wuhan , Nanjing , Shenzhen, etc .

Policy Advocacy

Yirenping has strongly contributed to the improved rights protection for China ‘s 93 million Hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers by advocating anti-discrimination legislation..

2007-2011: Yirenping wrote over twenty motions and recommendations for National People’s Congress (NPC) deputies and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) members, who then submitted them to the annual NPC & CPPCC sessions . .

March 2007: Yirenping called on NGOs to focus on the non-discrimination articles of the draft of the Employment Promotion Law, which left out Hepatitis B and AIDS discrimination. Yirenping later successfully lobbied the deputies of the NPC to submit proposals to amend the draft and finally got the draft amended .

October 2010: Yirenping sent a letter to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and The Ministry of Health, advocating for a review and subsequent elimination of current discrimination against HIV carriers in China ‘s civil servant recruitment system.

Stop Pediatric AIDS Now

The China AIDS Initiative (CAI), led by the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center (ADARC), is an alliance of Chinese and international organizations dedicated to helping China accelerate its response to HIV/AIDS. Their mission is to mobilize expertise and resources from its partner organizations to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. The project utilizes Rotary Foundation Matching Grant to test and identify HIV+ pregnant women in a highly-prevalent county, to administer and monitor antiretroviral drugs to mother and child, and to thereby reduce the transmission rate of HIV+ at birth from 33% to nearly 0%. The project serves an underserved rural “site” in Yunnan province, the epicenter of China AIDS epidemic. HIV in Yunnan is largely a disease of the rural poor and the problem is exacerbated by China’s dismantling of its rural medical system in the move toward privatization. The estimated length of time needed to complete the project is 3 years.
